Origin
Aconitum, commonly known as Monkshood, is a captivating cut flower that traces its history back to ancient times. The name “Aconitum” originates from the Greek word “akoniton,” which was used to describe the poisonous qualities of this beautiful bloom. Native to the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, Aconitum has a long-standing presence in traditional herbal medicine and mythology.
Characteristics
Aconitum boasts striking spires of vibrant, often blue or purple-hued flowers. Its tall, elegant stems can reach heights of up to 4 feet (120 centimetres), making it a commanding presence in any floral arrangement. The individual flowers, shaped like hoods or helmets, lend an air of mystique to Aconitum. This distinct appearance has earned it the nickname “Monkshood” due to its resemblance to the hoods worn by medieval monks.
The leaves of Aconitum are deeply lobed, adding an attractive foliage element to its overall appeal. This cut flower’s unique appearance makes it a valuable addition to both classic and contemporary floral designs.
Care
Upon arrival, recut the stems at a 45-degree angle to facilitate water absorption. Remove any leaves that will be submerged in water to prevent bacterial growth.
Use clean, lukewarm water in a vase with no residue from previous flowers. Change the water every two days to maintain freshness.
Adding a floral preservative to the water can extend the vase life of Aconitum.
Keep Aconitum in a cool location, away from direct sunlight and drafts. Aim for a temperature range of 10-15°C.
