Origin
Paeonia, also commonly known as peonies, are flowering plants belonging to the genus Paeoniaceae. The only genus within this family, peonies are prized for their large, showy flowers and attractive foliage. Native to Asia, Europe, and Western North America, these perennial plants come in a variety of species and cultivars, offering a wide range of colours and flower forms to gardeners.
Characteristics
Peonies are herbaceous perennials. The plants have attractive leaves that attract attention throughout the season. Peonies appear in spring and come in a spectrum of colours, including red, purple, pink, white and yellow. It is important to note that peony plants are toxic.
Care
Peonies are relatively low-maintenance plants, but need specific conditions to thrive. They prefer a sunny position with well-drained, fertile soil. Peonies benefit from regular watering, especially during their first growing season and during dry periods. Removing spent flowers during the flowering period stimulates flower production.
Blooming time
The flowering time of peonies varies depending on the specific variety and the local climate. Early-flowering varieties may start flowering late in spring, while late-flowering varieties do not reach their peak until early summer. With careful selection of varieties, you can enjoy flowering peonies for several weeks.
